The announcement of IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi’s first master’s program

A master’s degree in Energy Transition and Sustainability (ETS) has been introduced at Zayed University by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Abu Dhabi (IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi), the first foreign campus of the highly regarded IIT-Delhi.

The master’s program in ETS at IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi is set to begin in January 2024 and is tailored for the Abu Dhabi campus. Its goal is to prepare scholars and professionals in the energy industry and related fields by providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to apply sustainable approaches and solutions.

The program is especially important as the United Arab Emirates gets ready to host the much awaited COP28 this year, which falls on the same year as 2023—the UAE’s Year of Sustainability. In keeping with the main objectives of the UAE National Energy Strategy 2050, the program aims to equip graduates with a deep comprehension of state-of-the-art technology and progressive policy frameworks in order to develop a new generation of leaders who can successfully navigate the complex challenges associated with the energy transition.

Delhi’s IIT The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and IIT-Delhi signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MoU) in July, which led to the establishment of Abu Dhabi.

“Leveraging the critical importance of environmental sustainability in the energy sector, this innovative new program is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future in the UAE and beyond,” stated Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, Undersecretary at ADEK. We are dedicated to enabling people to drive positive change and lead a revolutionary journey towards a greener, more resilient world by developing a highly skilled human resource capable of successfully addressing a variety of increasingly complex challenges associated with the energy transition.”

Candidates for the ETS master’s program who have experience in science and engineering will start a two-year program at IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi after being accepted. Prospective candidates must possess a four-year bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, civil, petroleum, electrical and electronics engineering, energy, aerospace, materials and metallurgy, and physics. They also need to demonstrate their fluency in written and spoken English. An M.Sc. in chemistry or physics is also acceptable as an alternative.

Applicants will go through a rigorous process in accordance with the high standards of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi to assure the selection of the top individuals.
