Dubai South reports significant progress in the use of sustainable methods

Dubai South was able to divert 622 tons of solid trash from landfills in 2022, which is equal to 29% of the waste produced in that year.

Dubai South, the biggest master development focused on real estate, aviation, and logistics, announced that it has achieved a number of goals by implementing various sustainable practices in its operations at its headquarters and other structures.

Dubai South was successful in keeping 622 tonnes of solid trash out of landfills in 2022; that is, 29% of the waste produced in that year.

By using a combination of direct recycling and waste contract services to deploy material recovery facility (MRF) services, this endeavor was able to offset 0.63 tCO2 emissions.

Before this, between January 2014 and January 2021, 4,244 tons of waste—or 22% of all waste generated during that time—were directly recycled to keep them out of landfills, which avoided 3.87 tCO2 emissions.

The top energy supplier, South Energy, was successful in producing clean energy through its solar plant projects. From March 2020 to July 2023, 5,644 MWh of clean energy were produced, which is equal to more than 40,048 planted trees and offset 54% of the demand for electricity.

In 2021, it also accomplished 1,127,247 kWh of energy savings at the Business Park and HQ building, offsetting 519 tCO2 over a variety of projects.

According to Dubai South, the LED energy retrofits at its headquarters, the common spaces of Business Park, and four other buildings were finished in 2020. This resulted in an annual energy savings of 733,408 kWh and neutralized 322 tCO2 footprint. Additionally, after the project for the street lighting at Dubai South was completed in 2020, 4,458,445 kWh of energy savings were reported annually.

Following the project’s completion, South Energy’s district cooling plants have demonstrated remarkable energy retrofit results, saving 6.5 million kWh of energy, AED 2.9 million in energy costs, and a noteworthy reduction of over 2.9 million kilograms of CO2 emissions, according to the statement.

“As the UAE gears up to host COP28, we are pleased to see our sustainability approach yielding results since we embarked on this journey,” stated Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South, in reference to the company’s significant sustainability accomplishments.

“We are proud to be aligned with the government’s long-term vision and sustainability strategies for a better future and generations to come, and we will spare no effort to continue to contribute and apply different practices across Dubai South and its different buildings,” he said.

In terms of water recycling, the Dubai South Treatment Plant (STP) generated an offset of 2,471 tCO2 emissions in 2022 by treating 1,009,470 cubic meters (m3) of sewage to treated sewage effluent (TSE) from Dubai South and customers’ associated buildings.

On the other hand, Al Zaffin stated that the STP processed and generated 2,262,316 m3 of TSE between 2017 and 2021, resulting in a remarkable offset of 5,539 tCO2 emissions.

Furthermore, a water retrofit project at the VIP Terminal in MBRAH, 10 buildings at Sakany, 10 buildings at the Business Park, and the Dubai South HQ combined to save 16,984,611 gallons of water annually between 2018 and 2020. He continued, “This achievement led to an offset of 222 tCO3 emissions.”
